So at the end of my last post we had just left Sydney and were beginning our slow drive home.
As the next day was to be our 3rd wedding anniversary (8 April), I had told B whilst we were planning the trip to pick a place he'd like to stay, and I would pay for it as his gift (he'd bought me Dylan Moran and French & Saunders tickets as my anniversary present). So he piped up with 'Lilianfels', and off we headed to the Blue Mountains.
We spent the morning on the Zig Zag railway, based just outside of Lithgow, where we took a diesel engine right down into the valley, and then walked around the workshop. I have since posted lots of photos on my facebook page, only to find my brother in law helping me out with labelling the correct name of every train. I don't know what they are, except for carriages and engines!
In the afternoon we drove back to Katoomba and over to Echo Point where Lilianfels is located. This resort is like heaven on earth - I have never known a place like it. They treated us like celebrities the whole time we were there, and included so many little extras including valet parking and even a bottle of sparkling within minutes of entering our room! We were so spoilt the whole time we were there (even coming back from dinner to find complimentary slippers out waiting for us, and a hot chocolate ready to go too!), and we saved so much money courtesy of using the Entertainment Book. I think we had a 65% discount, including a gourmet breakfast the next morning.
We spent the latter part of the afternoon walking down to the Three Sisters and taking lots of photos of the incredible view and the way the colours changed as sunset approached. The walk down is extremely steep (most of the steps are like a ladder), but highly rewarding.
That night we went out to dinner at a local Italian restaurant (very funny walking past all the people staying at the resort to enjoy the $110 3-course dinner to go to a local family eatery!), and me being my usual clumsy self decided to fall head over tail whilst trying to open the car door afterwards and ending up with a blood nose! Even now, almost a month later, my nose is very very sore and I have to be careful not to bump it too much if I want to avoid a headache.
So we came back to our delicious hot chocolates and gourmet biscuits, and I finished the night in a very hot bath drinking the bubbly!
When I woke up the next morning, it was to the very sad fact we had to leave this AMAZING hotel, and continue west to our next adventure. Even now I keep thinking that we may have to do this every anniversary!
